With approaches dating back to the 20th century, the idea of a TPM is simple: An
isolated, constrained environment to offload trust establishment in a larger
computing environment. That implies cryptography, firmware, hardware, and per
application, different requirements. This talk elaborates on how the seemingly
simple concept has been expanded over the years, enumerating implementations in
hardware, firmware, other layers of software, and even web browsers, explaining
why it is in fact far more complex than anticipated by looking at contemporary
use-cases, ending up with a discussion around the controversy about Microsoft
mandating presence of a TPM in order to run Windows 11.

How independent is software from hardware? Unlike the tangible material of hardware, software is intangible, non-material. Or so it may seem. Often overlooked is the fact that the resource consumption of hardware is determined by the software running on it!

*How much energy is used?* Look at the software: the same machine doing the same task with different software can have drastically different energy demands. *How long is the operating life of a piece of hardware?* Again, software is critical. Software bloat requiring more and more powerful hardware results in new devices being manufactured and sold, while perfectly functioning devices are discarded.

So when thinking about sustainability, we at KDE Eco think software – especially Free Software – is a good place to start. Free Software means users and their communities have the freedom to control the software they use, not the other way around. These freedoms provide real choice: choice in what to install, or uninstall; options to modify software to run more, or less, efficiently; opting to continue support for older, but functioning, devices; and so on.

Each of these choices has a cost and/or benefit. For instance, the more (unnecessary) processes a piece of software runs in the background, the more resources the hardware will need. Multiply such costs by hundreds of millions, or even billions, of computer users worldwide, and it quickly adds up.

In short, software efficiency means resource efficiency.

Recently, the interdependency between software engineering and sustainability issues was officially recognized by the German Environment Agency (*Umweltbundesamt*, or UBA). As of 2020, UBA released the award criteria for desktop software to obtain eco-certification with the *Blauer Engel* label. Categories for certification include energy efficiency, extending the potential operating life of hardware, and user autonomy ... all of which fit seamlessly with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

The Blauer Engel 4 FOSS (BE4FOSS) project from KDE e.V. seeks to collect, summarize, and spread information related to eco-certification and resource efficiency as it relates to FOSS development. In this talk I will focus primarily on the energy consumption of software, which is also the focus of the Free & Open Source Software Energy Efficiency Project, or FEEP for short. I will walk the audience through the 3 steps for obtaining *Blauer Engel* certification: (1) *Measure*, (2) *Analyze*, (3) *Certify*. This 3-step workflow will be described in detail, with concrete examples from KDE software. I will end the talk with an open call for community engagement, both specifically in applying for Blauer Engel certification and more generally in supporting a resource-efficient, Free Software future.

Some websites offer a spinning wheel where you, in return for your e-mail address, can win prices and discounts and products. I dove into the code which powers this 'game', and discovered that many prices can't be won. By altering the javascript code which powers these games it's possible to alter the probabilities, but that does not help to win the interesting prices which lure you into giving your e-mail address. In this talk I will discuss what I discovered, how I did this, and what the results were. Last but not least I will try to find what the law says about this practice.

Sony, SanDisk, and Lexar provide encryption software for their USB keys, hard drives, and other storage products. The software is already present when buying a new product and used to keep data on the storage safe. This solution is developed by a 3rd party called ENCSecurity. The security claims of this solution were very strong *i.e.* "Ultimate encryption using 1024 bit AES keys Military grade". Our analysis of the DataVault software revealed three serious flaws impacting the security of the DataVault solution. This presentation is a look the flaws we identified along with our process for discovery and how the vulnerabilities were addressed.

The DataVault solution is a stand-alone application used by default as an encryption solution for many Sony, SanDisk, and Lexar products and as well used by some libraries to offer data security. This solution was not analyzed before, and the strong security claims were not assessed to match the reality. This presentation gives background details of the analysis and the context which brought us to perform the analysis. The method for reverse engineering and inspecting the DataVault solution will be presented. It turned out that the key derivation function was PBKDF2 using 1000 iteration of MD5 to derive the encryption key. The salt used to derive the keys is constant and hardcoded in all the solutions and all the vendors. This makes it easier for an attacker to guess the user password of a vault using time/memory tradeoff attack techniques such as rainbow tables and to re-use the tables to retrieve passwords for all users using the software. The implementation itself was incorrect and even with a randomly generated unique salt, it would be effortless to recover the password of a user. Other flaws of the key derivation function will be discussed and compared with nowadays good practices.

The data encryption method was also found to be malleable, allowing malicious modifications of files in a vault without any detection. No data integrity mechanism was set up. The settings of the full version of the software allows choosing between 4 different levels of security, namely AES-128, 256, 512 and 1024 bits. The encryption method has been reversed and is a CTR like construction based on AES-128 using a single key. Multiple iterations of encryptions are chained with the keys obtained by the key derivation function used as IVs. However, it turned out after the analysis that all these modes offer only a security level of 128-bit.

A plugin in John the ripper software to allow everyone to "practically brute force military grade AES-1024" will be released at the time of the presentation.

We have a continuous, welcomed, and constructive collaboration with the ENCSecurity company. During this presentation, we will explain the coordinated disclosure process, which was difficult since it impacted several vendors and some deployed libraries. The solution which was provided for the correction will be presented and compared to the best practice standards along with a discussion of the process of selecting the specific improvements.

By now most people have heard of, and to a degree: understood, the core principles of Bitcoin and proof-of-work based blockchains. But the past few years have brought us a larger universe of related technologies, inhabited by "crypto" enthusiasts. This talk will venture beyond the basic Bitcoin blockchain to explain more advanced (and/or simpler) projects, and skeptically evaluate their uses. Spoiler: There Are None.

I will introduce a number of fascinating and intellectually engaging protocols and concepts, from Decentralized Finance (DeFi) to Self-Sovereign Identities (SSI) to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT), in a way that is both technically accurate and unflattering.

As it will turn out, there really is not a single thing that can be solved with a blockchain that cannot better be solved in another way, except maybe for a single worldwide currency with low transaction rates and humongous externalized costs.

Still, the things are out there, draw in extreme amounts of engineering and cryptographical prowess, and provide for interesting (and at times: hilariously funny) case studies.

---

1. KV als Sourcecode ...
2. KV als Objekt-Modell ...
3. KV als Spezifikation ...
4. KV als Literatur ...

Motivation:
---

- Spaß an Sourcecode (lesen, schreiben, analysieren)
- Zusammenhänge erkennen (Big Pictures, TreeMaps, erstaunliche Text-Visuals)
- Überraschungen entdecken
- Vergleiche anstellen.

Fond are the memories of the Chaos Communication Camp 2019. If you attended, you most likely took with you a little wrist-mounted bio-sensor enabled hackable smart "watch" - the [card10 badge](https://card10.badge.events.ccc.de). It's like a time capsule from a better world.

While the hardware was set in stone back then, the [firmware](https://firmware.card10.badge.events.ccc.de) was absolutely not. Over time, it learned many new [tricks](https://git.card10.badge.events.ccc.de/card10/firmware/-/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md); we will show the cool things that happened since you last updated your firmware. And invite you to ~~resuscitate~~ reboot your card10 badge with more features, better Bluetooth, cleaner graphics and better sensor support than what you last remembered.

Alongside the talk we plan to host self organized sessions with workshops to help you make the most of this little gem. Maybe you don't need another smart watch? How about a BLE connected indoor climate sensor, connected to your Raspberry PI, serving it directly to your phone? Stay tuned.
