Solving social networking through interconnectivity
Steffen

Social networking needs to be decentralized, but how? Interoperability and federated data spaces have brought us a long way, but these solutions have their limits. We're building "user centered compatibility for non-interoperable systems", so users can stay connected with each other, no matter the tech their using.

Careables Online Exhibition - See you in Singapore!
Ricardo Ruiz, Fadia Elgharib, saad chinoy

Careables started with a question, if we are all different, why do we care for everyone the same?! This question started a four-year-long project that focused on making healthcare systems more open and accessible to people with different needs and backgrounds. Careables are healthcare devices co-designed in a collaborative ecosystem where people become creators, not only innovation users. In our case, patients, their families, healthcare professionals and designers are involved in the co-design process as experts in their specific environments. Using Digital Fabrication and technology, Careables devices are produced and then made available through open knowledge documentation on the careables.org platform for others to replicate and customize to their specific needs.

During this presentation, visitors will take a tour of our Online Careables Exhibition, where they will see first-hand the devices our partners created from around the world. This will be followed by a Talk and Q&A session on how Careables evolved during this last year in different countries from the Global South and how the opensource making experience can change the future of health and care.

WTHealth. Beyond genome sequencing
Lisette

Recorded talk will be available shortly!
The medical world is improving at rapid speed - say the magic words “personalized medicine”. This talk will provide some background on the use of DNA sequencing/other kinds of sequencing/other molecules used as markers for a potential disease. There are a multitude of gene-based diagnostic tests on the market and this is only the beginning. The prospect of whole-genome sequencing for everyone is on the horizon, but what are the implications? We touch upon ethical issues regarding risk and prognosis of disease (who needs to know?) or storage and use of your personal health records and sequencing data.

"Information. What are they looking at?" A documentary on privacy.
Pandemonium

“Information” showcases the threats created by the appalling misuse of modern technology in an ideological fight legitimised by the false dichotomy of freedom vs security. It shifts the representational power from discourse dominating white men towards the expertise of women and people of colour. It explores the connection between racism and surveillance, from social, political and historical standpoints. Featuring: Aditi Gupta, Dr Arata Takeda, Aral Balkan, Dr Constanze Kurz, Hossein Derakhshan, Jillian C. York, Mathana Stender, Maryant Fernández Pérez, Mishi Choudhary, Prof. Yasmin Jiwani. English & German with Subtitles in both languages. The documentary was realised without official funding, but with the amazing support of lovely people!

Tales from the Quantum Industry
Nacho - Natalie Kilber

The reality of quantum applications is that their applicability is optional. Let's shine a light on the status quo. The problems of today's quantum algorithms are just a midnight snack. Anecdotes await, like the trend to "democratize Quantum Computing" even though the QC security controls in place make it already an open system - with extra steps; or how actual Quantum Computing "clock-speeds" eat the quantum speedup claim for breakfast.

You will gain insight into the live coding community and its most beloved party. How to make people dance with algorithms? How to create algorithmic and generative dance music live? How is this practice opening new spaces to create music and visuals? Algorave is an inclusive, diverse, self-organized community that thrives in creating safe spaces worldwide and has grown together on the Internet.

Reproducible Building Network Infrastructure
Astro

Five years ago, C3D2.de moved into a newly renovated building, receiving the opportunity to run the network infrastructure. We have been running kind of a non-commercial ISP for our neighbors since then.

In this talk, I detail the design decisions that guided our network setup on both the Ethernet and the IP level. From the experience that we have gathered over time, I am going to lay out the design of our new NixOS-based setup to which I have migrated the complete codebase over the course of 2021.

This is a public model network project: https://gitea.c3d2.de/zentralwerk/network/

Mit, gegen oder jenseits von Politik? - Eine Reflexion über den paradoxen anarchistischen Politikbegriff
Jonathan Eibisch

The Rise and Fall of "Social Bot" Research
Florian Gallwitz

The idea that social media is populated by countless "social bots" has become widely accepted. "Social bots" are assumed to be automated social media accounts operated by malicious actors with the aim of manipulating public opinion. Alleged "social bot armies" have been reported during the election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum, and, more recently, in the context of the Covid19 pandemic. In fact, however, the relevant research is based on ridiculous, pseudoscientific methods, the failure of which the researchers regularly try to conceal by withholding the raw data. The alleged "bots" in these studies are almost exclusively normal people who are misinterpreted as "bots".

Software Architecture 101 - A Software Architecture Primer for Hackers and Makers
bigalex

Software Architecture might or might not be relevant for your projects. Mentioning it to hackers and makers can easily lead to a lively discussion about byzantine corporate regulations, awkwardly convoluted design requirements and harebrained projects devoid of any creativity or fun. But love it or loathe it, it's just there.

So how we gonna fix this? An engineering science should be a creative tool for hacking and improving things. What went wrong when it isn’t? And how can we start to set things right?

This talk offers a basic introduction to the field of software architecture, starting with the question of when it can be useful for the typical endeavors of hackers and makers. Let’s talk about what software architecture should be about, how it can help you in the creative use of technology or in understanding existing IT systems and projects, and what implications it has up its sleeve for your own projects. Spoiler: Only part of it is about technology decisions and patterns.

Full disclosure of interests: The speaker generates income as a trainer for software architecture and is a member of the International Software Architecture Qualification Board (iSAQB).
