“In a hierarchical and misogynist society like that of Rome, we could say that the Bacchantes were the representative of a sort of counterculture movement. As a matter of fact, the Bacchanalia broke the rigid convention of gender identities, sexual orientation, social status, and ethnic origin, imposed by Roman society, turning the rites into a sort of Temporary Autonomous Zones or “Safe Spaces” where initiates were free to express their deeper identity and experiment with new ones.”
