How can we concretely and materially implement a practice of care to support the learning of technology by women and gender minorities?
This presentation offers a reflection based on the organization of a video game design workshop dedicated to women and queer people, which took place over five years within the queer and feminist hackerspace Le Reset (2015–2020, Paris, France). We will first discuss the challenges we faced, both as queer and autistic individuals who had experienced more traditional hackerspaces, and as organizers of workshops aimed at marginalized communities. Drawing from our own experiences, readings, and observations, we developed a welcoming and facilitation policy aimed at enabling the appropriation of digital technologies by people who are often excluded from such spaces. We will describe how we went about this, and how we came to value care as a skill that anyone can (and should) learn and put into practice—rather than seeing it as a 'feminine disposition'.
