systerserver.town is a Mastodon instance. We’ll share experiences in running it collectively, talk about feminist perspectives on the Fediverse and invite you to join.
Part 1 (60 min)
This workshop introduces the Fediverse as a possible feminist alternative for micro-blogging, networking and community building. The Fediverse is a network of social media services such as Mastodon, a community-oriented, non-commercial and privacy-friendly social media service. There is a lot of queer, activist and tech-political activity on the Fediverse but not many instances (interconnected servers — each with their own code of conduct) are collectively run by FLINTA/feminists or specifically for feminist networks.
After a brief introduction to the Fediverse and Mastodon, we will talk about the story of systerserver.town and share some of the practices as well as difficulties around moderating and administrating this feminist Mastodon instance.
Systerserver.town is a small instance with no more than 50 active inhabitants. It is run as part of systerserver, one of the oldest feminist servers, which is taken care of by a translocal community of admins from the centers and margins of Europe, as well as from Latin America and Oceania.
Part 2 (60 min)
The second part of the workshop will start with an open round of networking, exchanging our experiences on the Fediverse as feminists (both as inhabitants as well as admins). There will also be the possibility for making new accounts or migrating your existing account to our instance.
In case you would like to create a new account, please bring a device (smartphone, tablet or laptop), access to your email and password manager (if you have one). You will also need to think of a name for your handle (like a nickname), which, once it is set, cannot be changed.
This workshop will be held in English. Some of the speakers are joining in remotely.
Feel free to join for only one of the two parts.
