Self-Hosting for Beginners: We will transform ESP32 microcontrollers into battery-powered servers. Each server establishes publishes a local website via a captive portal.
What if everyone carried their own local network on their bag? In this workshop, we will transform tiny ESP32 microcontrollers into autonomous, battery-powered servers. We call them Server Charms and they can be attached to bags, keychains, or worn as accessories. They host your personal web content that becomes accessible to anyone who connects to the network that is your server charm: Each server establishes its own WiFi network, and through a captive portal automatically displays the hosted content when someone connects to it. This creates an intimate, personal and very local publishing platforms attached to our bags. The servers can be populated with various content: from queer-feminist server manifestos to programmer jokes to tiny downloadable files. As a last step of the workshop, we will build protective cases for the servers and explore how we want to personalize our small pieces of selfmade digital infrastructure.
No previous knowledge required, just some curiosity for hardware and software. We are just learning this stuff together! You can bring your laptop but you can fully participate without one, as well.
