Self-Hosting for Beginners: We will transform ESP32 microcontrollers into battery-powered servers. Each server establishes publishes a local website via a captive portal.
What if everyone carried their own piece of local network on their bag? In this workshop, we will transform tiny ESP32 microcontrollers into autonomous, battery-powered servers. These "Server Charms" can be attached to bags, keychains, or worn as accessories while hosting personal web content that becomes accessible to anyone who connects to their network: Each server establishes its own WiFi network, and through a captive portal automatically displays the hosted content when someone connects to it. This creates an intimate, personal and very local publishing platforms attached to our bags. The servers can be populated with various content: from queer-feminist server manifestos to programmer jokes to tiny downloadable files. As a last step of the workshop, we will build protective cases for the servers and explore how we want to personalize our small pieces of digital infrastructure using different materials and techniques.
No previous knowledge required, just some curiosity for hardware and software. We are just learning this stuff together!
Notes: We will do a test run of the workshop and might adjust the duration a little.
